The next reveal is one that I am not too enthused over. I feel that I could have done a better job on this kit. The cockpit is quite bare and I didn’t think you would be able to see that well into it with the canopy installed. Turns out that you can see very well into it revealing a mediocre at best cockpit. Live and learn, right?
Arri Models continues to impress me with their kits. The ease of the build was the most prominent aspect that stuck out. It was a good build throughout. I chose to go with the camouflage scheme on this kit. I have never given a Japanese build anything other than gray or green so it was a nice change.
This was my first attempt at using the salt technique. It worked well in some areas better than others. It is still, to me, a more realistic approach than dry-brushing the paint chips on. So here it is. Not my best work but it’ll go up on the shelf nonetheless. I’m sure it will grow on me in time.
I don’t know, I think this looks really good. I love the weathering. It looks pretty beat up and poorly maintained like a Nell should. I think you should be proud of this one.

Thank you! I am mainly disappointed with my cockpit work. When I do a closed canopy, I don’t get too involved in the cockpit beyond basics because you can’t see well into it. Let me tell you that Arri Models has great canopies! It looks like there are just a couple folding chairs in an empty room!

Haha. Oh, I see. I didn’t look in the canopy. I was too busy looking at the rest of the plane. 😉

Hopefully my pictures hide it! Maybe I should have kept my mouth shut on this one.

Awesome finish! The chipped paint really takes it to another level!

Thank you! The salt technique really takes it to a different level. There is no way that I could dry brush all of that and have it look the same.

Japan built some attractive aircraft. Beautiful modelwork

Thank you! Japan certainly stepped it up for WWII. Luckily for us they conserved on the armor factor in their planes. I have a Frank and a Tony that will make an appearance this year.

The weathering worked really well. A useful tip picked up there, it looks great if you ask me!

Thank you! I am happy with how the weathering came out. I was worried until the end about how the paint would look.

Looks pretty authentic to me! What, you forgot to put in the altimeter and turn-and-bank indicator? 🙂

Ha ha ha! If you saw what I saw, you would have to agree. It’s just bare in the cockpit when you look in there. I just didn’t think I would be able to see so crystal clear inside there. It wouldn’t have taken much time at all to add a few things had I known.

Great looking Nell! This is such an important type, and one of those where I have no choices in 1/48. But it’s great to see brought to life here, the camo and weathering came out very well.

Thank you! I hate the limitations of scale. You’re a talented builder, though. Let’s see a scratch-built one!

Scratch build! You’re a funny man. I like to actually finish projects…

I’d have to agree on that. I know a guy who has been working on the same scratch-build for over three years. Kudos to him but no chance of me even attempting that.

If you don’t mind me saying so – the title of your blog is all wrong. There’s nothing amateur about your airplanes – they look exhibition grade to me and they are of such a standard that anyone would be delighted to be able to display them. Keep ’em coming.

You are way too kind there! I don’t come close to what the pros create. I like to try my hardest to get as realistic as possible, but I get a little lazy at times. I like having a nice displayable kit on the shelf when it comes down to it. You can be assured, I will always keep them coming!
